Performance Fabric Development
Performance fabric cannot be selected only by fiber percentage. Stretch direction, recovery, opacity, compression, hand, moisture behavior and construction must work with the actual garment.
Nylon / Spandex

Polyester / Spandex

Compression

Opacity
Stretch can reduce visual coverage, so activewear fabric should be evaluated under the actual extension expected in the garment.
Recovery
A fabric may stretch dramatically but still perform poorly if it does not return sufficiently after repeated wear.
Burnout, Devoré, Prints, Stripes & Surface Effects
Specialty fabric development can change both the visual surface and the physical structure of the textile.
Burnout—also called devoré—uses a compatible blended textile and a controlled process that selectively removes one fiber component in specific areas. The result can create translucent patterns alongside the remaining intact fiber.
The construction, blend and finishing process must be designed together. Not every fabric is suitable for this technique.

The exact workflow depends on whether we are sourcing an existing fabric or developing a custom textile, but the decision process should be structured around the finished garment.
Garment Requirement
Identify intended garment, fit, season, hand, stretch, weight and performance direction.
Swatch or Sample
Review a physical fabric, reference garment, technical specification or visual direction whenever possible.
Fiber & Construction
Determine fiber blend, yarn direction, knit or weave, GSM range, width and stretch requirements.
Stock or Mill Route
Determine whether an existing domestic source is appropriate or a custom mill program is necessary.
Sample Fabric
Evaluate available swatches, knitting trials, color development or specialty finishing where required.
Wash & Shrinkage
Evaluate weight, hand, dimensions, recovery, color and relevant performance after finishing.

Fabric Dye, PFD, Garment Dye & Finishing
Color strategy should be decided together with the material and the manufacturing method.
A fabric-dyed program may be selected when tighter pre-production color control is needed. PFD fabric may be preferable when garments will later receive garment dye or specialty washes.
Brushing, compacting, washing and other finishing steps can change the final GSM, hand, shrinkage and appearance.

Organic cotton describes the fiber source. It can be knitted or woven into jersey, rib, French terry, fleece, canvas and other constructions.
GOTS Material Requests
Projects requiring GOTS documentation must be reviewed around the actual supplier, material and applicable certified supply chain.
Recycled Fiber Options
Recycled polyester, recycled nylon or other recycled-content materials may be considered when appropriate documented sources are available.
OEKO-TEX® Requests
Applicable fabric or component documentation can be requested when product requirements call for specific textile testing standards.
We do not treat a fiber name or supplier description as automatic certification of every finished product. Claims should match the actual textile, supplier and documentation used for the project.

Custom fabric is different from selecting available stock. Knitting or weaving, yarn purchasing, dyeing, finishing and setup each have practical production minimums.
Those minimums vary by mill, textile construction, fiber, color and finish. A custom heavyweight fleece program may have a different minimum from a lightweight jersey, rib or technical stretch fabric.
For smaller apparel runs, we generally evaluate stock materials first. If the design requires a truly custom construction, we determine the appropriate textile quantity before committing the project.
