Pattern Making & Sample Development
Clothing Pattern Making &
Sample Development in Los Angeles
Euphoric Colors provides clothing pattern making and sample development in Los Angeles for emerging designers, established apparel brands and private-label companies preparing custom garments for production.
From tech pack review and first patterns to prototypes, fit corrections, revisions and pre-production samples, our development process is designed to turn your approved concept into a garment that can be manufactured accurately and consistently.
From Specification to Production-Ready Garment
Each stage builds on the one before it so fit, construction and technical requirements can be resolved before bulk production.
Measurements, construction, fabric, reference garments and product requirements are reviewed before pattern development.
The pattern establishes shape, proportion, balance, construction and the intended fit of the garment.
A physical garment is produced so fit, fabric behavior, construction and overall appearance can be evaluated.
Approved fit and construction corrections are transferred back to the pattern and resampled when required.
The approved pre-production sample becomes the technical reference for moving the style toward manufacturing.
The Pattern Is the Foundation of Your Garment.
Professional clothing pattern making transforms your design, measurements and construction requirements into the technical foundation used to build a production-ready garment.
At Euphoric Colors, patterns are developed with the complete manufacturing process in mind. Our Los Angeles development team evaluates fit, proportion, balance, construction and fabric behavior before your garment moves toward sampling and production.
Once the initial pattern is developed, we create a physical sample so your brand can evaluate how the pattern, fabric and construction work together on an actual garment. The sample can then be reviewed, fitted and refined before approval.
Establish silhouette, ease, length, balance and the intended garment fit.
Define seams, allowances, openings, pockets and garment assembly requirements.
Evaluate the physical garment and identify adjustments before final approval.
Approved patterns can move into grading, marking and preparation for bulk manufacturing.
A Pattern Defines the Garment. The Sample Proves It.
The first physical prototype allows your brand to review fit, construction, fabric behavior and design details before the style advances toward production.
EXPLORE SAMPLE DEVELOPMENT →Clothing Pattern Making and Sample Development
Sample development turns the pattern into a physical garment that can be evaluated before bulk production. This is where fit, proportion, construction, fabric behavior and design details are tested together and refined as needed.
Build the First Sample
The initial pattern is sewn into a physical prototype so the garment can be evaluated beyond measurements and technical drawings.
Evaluate Fit & Balance
The sample is reviewed for measurements, ease, proportion, garment balance, length, shaping and the intended fit of the style.
Check How the Garment Is Built
Seam placement, stitch construction, openings, closures, pockets, trims and other technical details are reviewed alongside the fit.
Revise & Refine
Approved fit and construction corrections are transferred back to the pattern so the next sample reflects the requested adjustments.
Approve the Development Sample
Additional sample rounds may be required until the garment's fit, construction and overall appearance are approved for the next stage.
Move Toward PPS
Once development is approved, the style can move toward a pre-production sample using approved specifications and production materials before bulk manufacturing.
What Are We Evaluating?
A successful sample is not judged by appearance alone. The development process evaluates how the garment fits, functions, is constructed and can ultimately be reproduced in production.
Development Sample vs. Pre-Production Sample (PPS)
A development sample is used to establish and refine the garment's fit, construction and design.
A pre-production sample (PPS) represents the approved style before bulk manufacturing and may incorporate the confirmed production fabric, trims, branding and construction specifications.
Not Every Garment Is Approved in One Sample Round.
New styles may require multiple fit and development rounds depending on complexity, fabric behavior, construction and the amount of adjustment required. The goal is to resolve issues before they reach bulk production.

Pattern Grading, Size Development & Production Preparation
Once the approved base size is confirmed, the pattern can be prepared for additional sizes and production. Grading, marking and technical preparation help turn one approved garment into a consistent size range that can be cut and manufactured efficiently.
One Approved Base Size Becomes a Full Size Range
Pattern grading increases or decreases the approved base pattern according to established grade rules so the garment can be produced across the required size range.
Good grading does more than simply make every pattern piece larger or smaller. Each point of measurement must change appropriately so proportions, fit, balance and construction remain consistent from one size to the next.
The grading strategy depends on the garment category, intended fit, customer size range and approved base specifications.
The base size shown above is only an example. Actual base size, grade rules and size ranges vary by product and brand.
Pattern Grading
Approved pattern pieces are increased and decreased according to the required size range and established measurement increments.
Size Specification Review
Key measurements and grade rules are reviewed to help maintain the intended fit, proportion and garment balance across sizes.
Marker Preparation
Production pattern pieces can be arranged into markers to support efficient fabric utilization and prepare styles for cutting.
Production Handoff
Approved patterns, graded sizes, specifications and production information are organized for cutting, sewing and bulk manufacturing.
Grading Should Happen After the Base Fit Is Approved.
Grading an unapproved pattern can create additional work and cost if the base size later changes. Finalizing the fit first helps prevent corrections from having to be repeated across the entire size range.
Before a Style Moves Into Bulk Production
The approved base garment, graded pattern, materials and PPS should all align before the style moves onto the production floor.

We Can Review What You Already Have.
If you already have a pattern, sample or digital pattern file, send it with your tech pack, measurements and size requirements. We can review the existing development and determine what may be needed before grading or production.
How Long Does Pattern Making & Sample Development Take?
Development timing depends on the garment, fabric, construction, fit requirements and the number of revisions needed. A clear tech pack, approved materials and fast feedback can help keep the process moving.
1–3 Business Days
We review the tech pack, reference images, measurements, garment construction, fabric direction and development scope.
3–10 Business Days
The first pattern is developed based on the approved specifications, fit direction and construction requirements.
7–14 Days
The garment is cut and sewn into a physical sample for fit, construction and design evaluation.
5–7 Days
Approved fit or construction corrections are applied to the pattern and a revised sample may be produced when needed.
Before Bulk Production
The pre-production sample confirms the approved garment direction before the style moves into manufacturing.
Development Time Changes With the Complexity of the Product.
A simple jersey T-shirt can move through development faster than a technical jacket, structured garment or style with specialty trims, washes, custom fabric or complex construction.
Send Complete Product Information Up Front.
A clear tech pack, reference garment, fabric direction, target size, artwork and construction notes reduce guesswork and help us evaluate the development path more accurately.
Timelines are estimates and may vary based on project complexity, material availability, revisions and specialty processes. Development timing begins after the required project information, approvals and applicable deposits are confirmed.

Common Questions About Pattern Making & Sample Development
Every garment develops differently. These answers cover some of the most common questions brands ask before beginning patterns, samples, fittings, revisions, grading and production preparation.
Do I need a tech pack before pattern making begins?
A tech pack is the preferred starting point because it gives our development team measurements, construction details, fabric direction, trims and other specifications. If you do not have one, send reference images, sketches, sample garments and measurements so we can determine what information is still needed.
Can you create a pattern from an existing garment?
An existing garment can be used as a fit or construction reference when appropriate. We still need to understand the requested design, measurements, fabric, construction and any changes you want made before the final pattern is developed.
How many sample rounds are usually required?
There is no fixed number for every garment. Some styles may move through development quickly, while technically complex garments, new fits or fabrics with unusual behavior may require multiple sample and revision rounds before approval.
What is the difference between a development sample and a PPS?
A development sample is used to establish and refine fit, construction and design. A PPS, or pre-production sample, represents the approved garment before bulk manufacturing and may include confirmed production fabric, trims, labels, branding and construction specifications.
When should pattern grading happen?
Pattern grading should generally happen after the approved base size and fit are confirmed. Grading an unapproved base pattern can create unnecessary work if corrections later have to be repeated across the entire size range.
Can you work with an existing digital pattern?
Yes. Existing digital or production patterns can be reviewed with your tech pack, measurements and sample garment to determine whether corrections, grading or additional development are needed before production.
How long does clothing sample development take?
After the project is confirmed and the required information is available, first sample development typically takes approximately 7–14 days. If revisions are required, corrections generally take approximately 5–7 days depending on the garment and requested changes.
Can Euphoric Colors move my approved sample into production?
Yes. Once development is approved, Euphoric Colors can support grading, PPS approval, material confirmation, cutting, sewing, finishing, quality control and bulk Made in USA apparel production in Los Angeles.
