Time to  look into some of the most common clothing line or accessory business models to get a better sense of the work, time and investment required for each

Let’s take a look at the most common options:

  1. Print-On-Demand

  2. Private Label Clothing or accessory Line/Wholesale

  3. Custom Cut & Sew Clothing Line

1. DGI-Print-On-Demand Clothing Line

An attractive option for a low budget (less than $1,000) and those wanting to benefit from being able to set up a nearly fully-automated business. The biggest drawback to this type of business model is the lower profit margins and the lack of ability to differentiate your product on things like material, stitching and fit since you’re using standard wholesale clothing.

Direct-to-garment printing we are directly printing onto clothing and apparel.  These digital printers can produce full-color images with extreme accuracy.

High quality printed apparel quickly and efficiently. (including just 1 unit).

Pros

  • No set-up costs

  • High-quality prints

  • Unlimited color options

  • Perfect for low order quantities or one-offs

  • Many clothing options or accessory (shirts, leggings, socks, dresses,tote-bag-socks, etc.)

Cons

  • Not cost effective for large production runs

  • Generally no volume discounts

  • Limited print product selection

  • Limited finishing options (tags, labels, etc.)

Timeline: Days

Costs: $0-$500

2. Wholesale/Private Label Clothing Line

This option is giving you more options for personalization and higher margins while costing more and taking slightly longer to get started.

This method involves using blank clothing apparel or accessory customizing it, by adding your label and graphics.

This allows you to further increase your brand’s perceived value to achieve greater margins. Finally, purchasing inventory upfront allows for more cost-effective and equally high-quality printing processes like screen printing (as opposed to digital direct-to-garment printing, embroidery or sublimation process.

Screen printing is an old technique that has stood the test of time. As one of the most popular methods for printing onto clothing and apparel, screen printing can produce durable and long lasting result. However, it has a labor-intensive setup process which means screen printing is it's most cost-effective when printing in bulk.

Pros

  • Cost effective in large batches

  • Volume discounts

  • Increased perceived value from customers

  • Increased margins

Cons

  • Not cost effective for large inventories of designs, colors, and sizes

  • Can only print simple images and designs (not photographs)

  • Minimum order starts at 24 units per color/size

  • You’ll have to manage inventory and shipping yourself

Timeline: Weeks

Costs: $2,500+

Time & Energy Input: Medium
